Plans have been approved to demolish the former Poundstretcher unit at the entrance to the Chantry Centre, which will become the location for Andover’s brand new theatre.
The unit was originally designed for commercial purposes and the existing structure must be demolished to allow for the development of a completely new building. In line with the vision set out in the community-led town centre masterplan, the new theatre will offer a larger venue than the current Lights theatre, featuring a multi-level auditorium and modern spaces for the community to use for a variety of events and activities.
With planning permission now granted the council will procure a contractor to begin demolition in late spring. During this process the council will continue liaising with local businesses and residents to keep them informed of demolition plans and phases.
Whilst the demolition work progresses the council will be sharing the design proposals for the new theatre with the public ahead of submitting a second application to construct the new venue. If plans are approved, construction will commence in early 2026.
Leader of the council, Cllr Phil North said: “The project to build a new theatre is now in full swing and we’re taking big steps forward to move the Lights into a new state-of-art venue.
“Over the next few weeks we will be sharing plans for the theatre so residents and businesses can see the fantastic facilities that the new space will have to offer.”
